Chehel Menbari | 2012

In certain regions of Iran, there are distinct mourning rituals for Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet of Islam. "Chehel Menbar" in Khorramabad, Iran, is a centuries-old tradition observed on Tasoa Day. Women cover their faces with hoods in a religious ceremony, fast silently, and light forty candles outside forty houses.

I placed the cloth used by women as a cover in front of my camera lens and attempted to immerse myself in the perspective of those participating in this ceremony, observing the surrounding space and events through their eyes.
